Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 4:09 PMI am personally tired of hearing about this story and it pisses me off that it is gaining more and more press. this dude makes claims about being raped by a black man, and yet there is absolutely no physical evidence of a rape ever occurring. He said he came forward after the attack to bring attention to it. The place where he claims the 'rape' occurred is an area that is heavily frequented by men for anonymous sex. there are people around pretty much 24/7 because it is very close to bars, restraunts and of course the cruising. Overt racism against blacks and latinos in the Castro has been evident for years and years. Now...I am not going to say that this did not happen, but the lack of any evidence, DNA or otherwise and the holes in the story I read are enough for me to pause for a minute. As a man of color who has had first hand dealings with the racism in SF, I don't buy it and it reminds me of the innocent black AND latino men who were hung when whites claimed rape or abuse when no evidence ever existed. Have you read today's story of the black woman in West Virginia who was tortured and raped by an entire white family? -

Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 1:23 AMYes I did see that. She was forced to eat rat and dog feces. You will never see it hit any real big media outlet. Most people will think she deserved it.
I don't like dealing with racist shit. I recently tried to join into the LBGT BDSM scene here in San Francisco and was rudely awakened to the bigotry, prejudice and racism that exists. I am not even dealing with the larger community as a whole.. because I know it is even bigger time there.
I want to here people's anguish and experience. It will help me to remember I am not going crazy. -

Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 2:46 PMWhile living in the Castro for an entire year, I rarely felt, without a reason of a doubt, as if i were in the midst of racism in an establishment. However dealing with men, far other thing. The Midnight Sun and Moby Dicks is where I've had times where i'd get attitude for no reason...and I would shrug it off as the bartender having a bad day. I never dealt with shit period at badlands but can deffinitely see others having to deal with it. I'm under the belief that it sorta boils down to if you look like you have money or look like you fit into their "style".. The days i would show up meeting a gaggle of friends with my sexiest shirt on and ripped jeans and a party boy attitude i would get in without question or id check.. However the days when i was alone and maybe was just killing time on the way back to my place in Castro, I would get carded or deal with attitude.
SOMA should actually be looked at, in terms of racial problems. I could never tell if they're clubs were ACTUALLY inclusive. I know the Stud, where i worked, was COMPLETELY rainbowed out.
as for the rapes. Fuck that... Their are far more pressing issues... Hows about the gand initiations happening. My friend was stabbed not to long ago on 19th (was in the B.A.R) and several others are being pursued and the Castro patrol members acted as if they gave a fuck... (getting Cliffs to hand out free whistles after the incident) but The Castro Patrol, esspecially Carlton, don't strike me as really commited to the issues... because i can count the times i've seen them out in the past year on ONE hand. Some of the people involved, in discussions i've had with them are just full of shit. I even attempted to join... but they're not organized. -

Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 5:06 PMMamacita, you aint goin crazy, but sometimes it seems as if so! Racism goes far beyone physical and into the mental and spiritual quickly. It seems as if we are isolated and alone, but these forums can create a space where we can share about this and connect with others. Trust me, DC is very, very segregated. Different than SF in so many ways and in some, more honest. At least here you know up front where you are viewed. I am not gonna say that in black clubs that I have not waited forever for a drink, cause I have out here too. But I am not going to stay in the ONE latino club in DC to get a drink and chill.
Back to the 'rape'...I will share that when I was 20 yo I was accosted by a white man who was the manager of a restaurant that I was at. I was totally freaked out as he held the door shut and grabbed me and felt me up and tried to kiss me. Yes, I did freak out and yes I did just want to get out, but I also went home and called the police, went with the police to the restaurant and identified him and witnessed him being arrested and also testified against him (with his wife and children presnet) in court. I won the case against him as he pled no contest. -

Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 7:50 PMGood for you. You did not let that assault slide. I let a very serious assault go un-reported and I have suffered physicaly, mentally, and spiritually since 1982. I am just now getting my power back.
I have seen the segregation outside of SF. I am glad I was born and raised here. I am such a multicultural person as the result of it.

Re: San Francisco Gay Community Grapples With Race, Rape
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 5:41 PMThe article is all over the place and it is disappointing that the initial focus is on the Walsh case, since the article goes on to point out the racist issues in the Castro we have been talking about here since our RR tribe was started.
